As a pre-internet teenager growing up in suburban Australia, Kenn regularly undertook the hour-long train trip to the heart of Sydney, where he could watch movie trailers that would play on a multi-screen display in the foyer of the city multiplex.
His love of film meant writing screenplays was inevitable, and he began to do so with his brother. Together they wrote three feature scripts, one of which they entered in the Australian iteration of the Matt Damon/Ben Affleck creation Project Greenlight. Beating over a thousand applicants to win the million-dollar first prize, they directed their feature The View from Greenhaven the following year and it was released in 2008. Its Australian cinematic run lasted nine months before extending into New Zealand.
Not long after the Australian launch, Kenn moved to the celluloid mecca of Los Angeles to pursue further opportunities in film, and in 2010 spent three months in Rhode Island directing Missing William, starring Brandon Routh (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Superman Returns), Courtney Ford (Dexter), Reid Scott (The Big C) and Spencer Grammer (Descent), scheduled for a 2012 release. He also penned the original feature Baptism, a dramatic thriller now being packaged, and has several other screenplays in various stages of development.
A copywriter for over twelve years, Kenn also keeps one foot back in his advertising roots with TV commercial work, having directed spots for some of Australia's top agencies and now being sought after for more projects in the North American and global markets. |
